Tufting

What exactly is tufting?

Tufting is a technique for producing textile surfaces in which yarn is stitched through a base fabric using a special machine called a tufting gun. This method is often used for carpet production, but can also be applied to other textile arts such as wall hangings or furniture upholstery. The result is a fluffy surface that can be designed either as a loop pile or a cut pile.

In other words, you can make your own carpet! It's a lot of fun and you can let your creativity run wild.

The tool: The main tool is a tufting gun or machine, which works like a sewing machine with a needle, but is faster. (Of course, you can also tuft by hand.)

The material:

Yarn is stitched through a stretched backing material (a base fabric—the gray fabric, for example) from the back.

The result:

Loops form on the front. These can either be left as they are, resulting in a loop pile carpet, or they can be cut open to create a soft high pile carpet.

Finishing: To prevent the pile from coming loose, the back of the finished object is usually glued and covered with a fabric (non-slip backing fabric).
